State-End of the 2011 Season

We took it on the road one more time and headed down to State in Olympia. It was great to be back on the big stage.

Best way to put the 2 Day Experience, A Roller-Coaster, but one Ride I would do over and over again.

We lost our 1st match in 5. Played hard but came up short. We then went out and looked to be effectively done in our 2nd Match, but found a fire deep inside and pulled out a thrilling down 0-2 to come out 3-2 victory and a shot to play on the 2nd Day.

We loved it and we went down and cheered on the Football team that night, who was playing in Tumwater. They had an amazing game, much congrats to them.

Day 2, saw us come out and play hard, but it wasn't enough to over take Black Hills and with a 0-3 Match loss we ended a wonderful 2011 VB Season. We finished tied for 12th and played on the last day of organized HS VB in the State.

As I look back over the last 10-11 Weeks, I am filled with much Joy for all this team went out an accomplished. They played as a team and never gave up on each other.

I want to Thank Tory, Madeline, Sami, Morgan, Beth, Angelina, Sarah, Annie, Amanda, Alex, Marea, and Hannah for giving of your time and effort to help build this program into what it is today. I owe you all a sincere debt of gratitude.

I also want to thank Greg, could not have come close to doing all this without your help and feedback throughout the year, Your the best GP!!!!!

Lastly, but not least, I want to thank the hardwork of the JV team this year. Sarah has alot to be proud of, as do the rest of us. I also want to give a sincere thanks to the JVC kids and our new coach Mary Kay for working hard and going up against the odds week in and week out, but doing it with a smile and positive determination.

We will put the final wrap on the 2011 season with the VB Banquet next week at school and then put it all to bed until 2012 rolls around.

District Wrap-Up

Alittle late in getting this posted, but things have been alittle hectic as we roll into another week of practice and why are we practicing you say, because the AMHS Varsity Volleyball team played and EPIC 5 set match against SWHS last Saturday with loser out and winner to state and we pulled it off.

All I am going to say about the match is, it was the greatest match I had been involved with, with regards to a conference opponent, in my 3 years here at Archbishop Murphy. You throw out all the head to head and just get down to the heart of the matter, who will dig the deepest and find a way to win and we did, by ending the 5 Set on a 7-0 run, after being 3 pts away from elimination and winning 15-12!!!!

It was a great win and also a heartfelt loss for 2 great Seniors from SWHS- Linden Firethorne and Brittany Woods. These 2 Seniors have helped to grow the Cascade Conference Volleyball scene since I have been here as a coach and I can't thank them enough for their athletic ability and drive and desire, they will be greatly missed.

As we came down off of that great match we played our 3rd/4th place consolation against Sehome, which they won in 4 and we finished 4th.

Now we set our site on one more weekend- STATE!!!!!

Hope to see you all at Evergreen State College next Friday as we take on White River in our 1st Match at 9:45 on Ct. 2

DAY 1 of Districts is in the Books

We took the little White Bus to SWHS yesterday to start our Journey into the District Playoffs.

The makeup of the team has shifted some over the last week as we have incurred some injuries to key players on our team, so the dynamics have had to shift some.

We came out in the 1st match against Sehome, from the NWC.

I knew it would come down to who could stop whose OH's on the night. The Match went back and forth, we won the 1st set, they won the 2nd set, we won the 3rd, they won the 4th and it came down to one game to 15 for the win.

Their OH's were putting some good swings down and we had a tough time adjusting to their spots where they were hitting them and in the end, they took the 5th set and the match.

We moved to the 2nd round with a good sense of what we needed to do and looked forward to the match against Lakewood.

Lakewood came out fast in the 1st set and took a quick lead. I explained to the Girls it is not about Skill at this point, it is about Will and Desire. Whoever can tap the emotion will have the ability to succeed.

We righted the ship and found our Passion. We played well and took the match in 3 straight sets.

So it is on to Saturday and a match against South Whidbey, winner to State!!!!

2011 Conference Season comes to a Close

We took it on the road for the last time in Conference play for 2011 and headed across the water to SWHS.

It was the last match for our JVC and JV kids.

JVC played some great cohesive VB and showed how you can fight through injuries and play with limited bodies on the bench and ended their Season with a 2-1 Set and Match victory.

Congrats to Mary Kay and her wonderful group of Kids- Monica, Maddie, Jillian, Malia, Julia, Jassmyn, Hannah, and the wounded Warriors- Chloe and Teresa. Great Year with a very composed, Hard Working Team!!!!!

The JV team found the last match to be a tougher road to plow and in the end lost 1-2. They had sustained some late season injuries and the rotation were shifted to offset this and they battled with it and getting a feel for it, so much commendably respect for fighting hard through it.

I want to thank Sarah for coaching the JV team this year, along with her players- Allie, Ria, Paula, Caroline, Abby, Rachael, Colette, and Catherine. Great work put in this year.

The Varsity took part in their 2nd Senior Night on the road and we want to thank the SW VB Team for honoring our 6 Seniors at the start of the ceremony last night.

Once the ceremony was completed, the match started and we came out and played some amazing cohesive Volleyball in the 1st Set. Everything was clicking and we came away with a 25-7 set 1 win.

Set 2 saw us in get in our groove, but also saw SW start to move the ball around. They made one run on us, but then Beth stepped in and put up a couple of blocks and then we started clicking again. Behind some solid hitting of Amanda and defense by Hannah, we pulled away and took the second set 25-18

The 3rd set, saw SW go for broke. Sometimes when you play with such a heightened sense of urgency, you can bring the Energy back, which they did. Riding their Seniors they took the third set 25-16.

The 4th Set, saw us get back to playing our consistent defense. We put a good run on them when we were down 5-6 and from there we never looked back and kept doing the little things that builds our confidence (Good Serving, Good Defense, Solid Hitting). We took the fourth set 25-18 and the match 3-1.

We put an end on another successful Conference Season, where we went 12-2.

Next up- Rd 1 of Districts on Nov 2nd.

SENIOR NIGHT 2011

I am always amazed of the outpouring of affection the Girls bestow upon each other. They truly love each other and it showed as 6 players showered 6 Seniors with Love, Laughter, Tears, and some nice goodies on their Senior Night.

Annie Schmidt
Came back to VB last year and I am so grateful for that. She makes each day a great Day and I will always remember that.

Marea Homes
True Competitor who goes hard all the time and at the same time has a deep genuine compassion for her teammates and life in general. I will always be humble because of Marea

Amanda Marvin
True Shining Spirit. Great Competitor and a huge Heart. She has given me the ability to learn about Kindness

Alex Flake
She is hard on herself, but only because she cares so deeply for her teammates and this program. She has true Compassion and I will always remember how fortunate I have been to be a part of her life

Hannah Linsenmayer
She has been on Varsity since I 1st Started here. She has shown me the ropes and her professionalism has shone through since day one. She has a kind soul and is wise beyond her years. I will always take a sense of pride to have Hannah blaze a trail for this program for the future and I am proud I was here for her time now.

So we did play some VB. Lakewood came to town and we honored 3 Seniors players and 2 Senior Managers for their team, as they have earned our respect over the years and they deserved some recognition.

The Girls gave beautiful speeches and I will always remember, Morgan speech starting with "Annnie, I wrote you a Poem" It was a great poem, as were all the other tributes.

Once we got down to the match, we hit the ground running and kept Lakewood on their heals the entire 1st set and we won 25-9.

Set 2, I mixed the lineups up, something I seem to do every Senior Night with not alot of success as we came out alittle unbalanced and lost the set 21-25.

We mixed it back up and it was back and forth in the 3rd, but we got some amazing defense by Annie and Hannah and pulled out the set 25-23.

4th set had the Seniors back in there ready to go again and they led the way and we closed out the 4th set 25-12 and the match 3-1.

We ended the Home season 6-1. We had some amazing fans, many great moments, capped off by another remarkable Senior Night!!!!

We take it on the road to South Whidbey to finish out Conference play next Tuesday.

10.18.11-KINGS!!!!!

Took it on the road to the confines of Kings HS.

As always we look forward to the incredible competition we provide each other.

JVC/JV- Fought hard and both teams are playing short-handed, but made the most of their opportunities to step up and work together. In the End the abundance of Kings players were too much for our girls and both team last their Matches. Valiant Effort!!!!

The Varsity came into the night playing with "House Money" and nothing to Lose and after we graciously sat there while 9 Seniors for Kings were honored, we came out with intensity. We were not going to let them have this match, if they wanted it, they had to take it from us.

We jumped out to an early lead in the 1st game and Kings found themselves on their heals. We kept the lead most of the way through the 1st Game, behind some amazing defense. We had a 23/21/19 Ball rally in the 1st Set alone. Kings started chipping away late in the game and they came up with 2 runs that were the difference and we lost the 1st set 21-25

The 2nd Set was back and forth and we rode the wave of Marea and her Warrior spirit to keep fighting. It was back and forth late and we had a 19/18/18/16 Ball rally in the set, yet we came up 2 points short 23-25

In between sets 2-3 the entire team pulled themselves in tight and focused on the energy of the core. The bench was driving a positive flow that kept building throughout the 3rd set. We came out on fire again, behind the hitting of Marea and the defense of Hannah. Amanda, Beth, Morgan, and Sarah kept swinging away. The balanced attack that Kings had that night was just a hair better than we were and in the end, they took the 3rd set 19-25, and the match 3-0.

All in all on the night, it felt like we played 10 sets. The rallies were never ending. The Energy was AWESOME!!!!

All 12 players, whether they were on the floor or on the bench, helped to drive us to compete at the highest level and we did. We might not have won the match by the numbers, but we won the match of Will, Desire and Heart.

Sultan comes to Archbishop Murphy

Thursday night saw the Turks of Sultan come to Archbishop Murphy.

I could sense some good energy by the JVC team when I arrived and felt they were in for a big night and I was right.

Madeline led off the 1st game going for 10pts on her serve, coupled with some good defense to keep the drive alive. They kept the big Mo going in won the 1st Set going away.

The 2nd Set found them still in a groove. Sultan put in a late charge, but they couldn't topple our kids and Jillian served an Ace to win the 2nd Set.

The 3rd set, saw the same drive and power as the sets 1 and 2 and in the end, the game away with a 3 Set Match Sweep.

These young women, have been road warriors, playing anyone, anytime, anywhere. The Wins on the scoresheet have not shown up, but the determination and drive to get better, shows me the true winning spirit they have inside of them. GREAT JOB GIRLS!!!!!

The JV had alittle trick up their sleeve that they were going to pull last night, which they had been working on in practice- Allow Rachael to set in one spot and have Abby hit. Worked like a champ and they cruised to the 1st Set Victory.

Set #2, saw them cruising and trying some new things. Sultan put a run in the end of the game, but it wasn't enough and we won Set 2.

Set 3 was a mirror of Set 2 and in the end they JV Girls pulled away with a 3-0 Set Sweep and Match Win.

The Varsity took the floor determined to take care of business. It took alittle motivating and they pulled out the 1st Set 25-15.

As I talked to them between Set 1 and 2, I reminded them of all the hardwork and effort they put forward in practice and to use that as motivation to go out and play hard. They responded and took Set 2- 25-8.

The 3rd Set was back and forth through the 1st half of it and Sultan was starting to do some good things. We turned up the defense and in the end pulled away 25-19 to take Set 3 and the Match.

We look to Saturday and traveling to Monore for the Bearcat Invitational. The last Tournament of the Season.

Took it on the Road to Duvall!!!!

Tuesday saw us on the road at Cedarcrest.

Our JVC troopers made their way to Mariner HS, where they fought hard but came up short 0-3. They need some home cooking

The JV came out alittle slow in the 1st and realized that if they do, they can be beaten, as Cedarcrest took the 1st set. This awoke the players and their sense of determination to win took over and in the end took the match 2-1.

The Varsity came out with a confidence to keep the home crowd quiet. The noise was loud to start the match, but by the end of the 1st set, we had seized some momentum, going up 1-0.

We kept applying the pressure and the 2nd set came our way after some great defense by all the players in the backrow. We were now up 2-0.

The 3rd set saw the Cedarcrest girls playing loose and it was some great sideout VB by both teams. In the end we rode the power of Amanda who put down 3 critical kills late to take the 3rd set and sweep the match 3-0.

Home Cooking for all the teams as we welcome the Turks of Sultan to our Gym Thursday.

Granite Falls comes to Archbishop Murphy

Our 1st Home match of the 2nd Half had us hosting Granite Falls.

Our JVC kids took it on the road, to play Jackson and played hard but fell 2-1. Making Great Strides!!!

The JV came in fast and took control and by the end of the match took a 3-0 Match victory. Great Group effort from everyone.

The Varsity set the tone in Warmups and showed what good energy was throughout the whole night and in the end came away with a 3-0 Victory. Great contributions by all.

Congratulation goes out to Hannah Linsenmayer, who played some great Defense last week, in our 2 Wins against Lakewood and South Whidbey.

2nd Half is Underway

The JV and Varsity Teams headed out to Coupeville to start off the second half of Conference play, while the JVC kids stayed home to host Kennedy.

The JVC has fought all year long and been short handed at times. The played with only 6 of their 9 players yesterday and fought hard the entire match, but ran out of steam against Kennedy 3-0.

They are a remarkable and resilient group of young women, who have the odds stacked against them, but never give up and play hard, so for that we all owe them much respect.

Great Job Girls!!!!

The JV, came out alittle sluggish in the 1st Set, but things started clicking at the start of game 2 and in the end won the match 2-1.

Ria played some exceptional Libero against Coupeville and found herself working hard the entire match and showing her true ability to lead the defensive charge for her Team. Congrats Ria.

The Varsity, came out and took care of business from the get go. Alex was feeling under the weather, yet played great and her teammates helped by getting balls to her so she could save her strength and set some great passes.

It was a team effort again and one that grew by one as we welcomed Sarah back onto the court. She didn't skip a beat.

We kept applying the pressure throughout the entire match and in the end won the match 3-0.

Looking ahead to Granite Falls tomorrow night.

3rd Annual Dig for the Cure Match- HUGE SUCCESS!!!

We put a great cap on the 1st half of Conference Play by hosting our 3rd Annual DIG FOR THE CURE match against South Whidbey HS.

All 3 Teams came out ready to play and it showed right off the bat with the JVC and JV Matches.

The JVC match brought a good friend of mine into the Gym, Jim West. I knew their girls would be well coached and it showed as they took the 1st game. Our Girls came out and played back and forth the 2nd game and took it, 33-31!!!! Came down to the last game and once again back and forth and end the end, SWHS was just a hair better, winning 18-16. Phenomenal Match played by Both Teams.

The JV kids took some time to find their balance and dropped the 1st game, but game back strong in Games 2 and 3 winning the match 2 games to 1. Great play.

The Varsity for SWHS came out of the gate fast and furious and fed the ball to their Start MH, Linden Firethorne in the 1st game and we were slow to respond. The 1st Set ended with SWHS winning 25-14.

I shook the lineup up in the 2nd set and the team became invigorated and started to put it together. Behind some great hitting by Alex Flake and key Setting as well, along with help from Tory Popp, they quickly took the 2nd Set 25-15.

In the 3rd set, the lineup changes did not stop and they took the new pieces and molded them together and fought for a very good 3rd Set win 25-19.

At this point, we knew we had to keep pushing and behind some great Backrow defense led by Hannah Linsenmayer, with the help of Annie Schmidt and Angelina DeGrazia, we kept putting balls up and allowing the offense to flow and took the 4th Set 25-14 and the Match 3-1.

All in all a some great rebound Volleyball played by all.

As the Volleyball was the center attraction, the surrounding environment, that was the Dig for the Cure was a phenomenal Success, in large part to all the Parents who coordinated and volunteered of their time to help make this event another success. We raised close to $1000 for this event.

I want to thank you all from the Bottom of my Heart for all of your hard work and dedication to our remarkable Volleyball program. I special nod went out to a great woman last night, from the coach, to his beloved Mother, Alice Curtis, the ultimate Cheerleader for us.

Took on the Road to Lakewood

September 27th found us on the road in a freakish Rain Storm as we drove north to Lakewood HS. The Rain was a great reminder why we love to play Volleyball (Warm Climate and Indoors)!!!!

As we made our way to Lakewood our JVC team stayed behind to take on our neighbors from Glacier Peak's JVC team at AMHS. The Girls played great and in the end Glacier Peak came away with the victory 3-0.

Our JV team, playing short handed, came out and worked on finding good cohesion against a scrappy Lakewood team who would not let a ball hit the ground on their side. The truly knew how to cover 900sq. feet of the volleyball court. In the end Lakewood played a great hustle and cover style and won the match 2-1.

The Varsity team hit the floor for the 1st time since the stinging loss to Kings and went to work quickly to start the match behind some key hitting of Marea Homes and Amanda Marvin. We worked hard to keep the ball in play and it payed off with a Set 1 victory, 25-15.

Serving was key all night and it showed in the 2nd set, as we found ourselves down 9-14 and Beth Carlson,Tory Popp, and Alex Flake came up big in their service rotations, giving us a 10-3 point swing and taking the set 2, 25-19.

We started off slow in the 3rd set, down 0-4 before Alex went back to serve, but behind some key serving again from Beth and some solid swings by Amanda we pulled ahead 9-7 and keep applying the pressure all the way through and took set 3, 25-19 and the match 3-0.

All and all a good win and a confidence builder.

Tomorrow night is the big Dig for the Cure night as we welcome South Whidbey HS to AMHS.

Kings Came to AMHS-9.22.11

Last night the Lady Knights from Kings came to Archbishop Murphy. We knew it would be a high-octane roller-coaster ride all night and it lived up to that.

Are JVC and JV teams played their matches side by side.

The JVC girls believed in keeping the ball in play and extending the rallies and it payed off by winning the 1st set. They knew they had to bear down as this wasn't the end. Kings came back hard and took the 2nd game, forcing one game for it all to 25 in the 3rd. It was back and forth with each point and many great rallies, ultimately the depth of Kings overcame our girls and took the 3rd game and the match.

Gillian, Malia, Julia, Hannah, Monica, Jassmyn, Maddie (Chloe and Teresa- Cheering from the Bench), played like Champions and competed hard all match. Great Job Girls!!!!

The JV went hard at Kings and it was back and forth the 1st Game. The game and the match took a turn when Setter, Abby Jamieson, hurt her wrist and had to come out of the match and did not return. The team shuffled around this and took the load upon their shoulders to keep pushing. In the end, Kings was able to rise above and take all 3 Games and the Match. Heroic fight girls and much was gained by your play.

The Varsity knew they had to rock Kings World coming into last night to keep pace in the Conference. We came out going toe to toe in the 1st set, by some great serving/defense by Hannah Linsenmayer and Blocking by both of our MH's. Kings put on a violent run at the end of Set One and took it 25-21.

Going into the 2nd set, we knew our margin for error was very slim and like the good team that Kings are they found it and took advantage of it. We kept pushing and pulling. They came out swinging hard and adjusted to some great blocking by Beth Carlson and took the 2nd Set 25-18.

The last game came down to, will Jeff lose his voice and will we find a crack in the Knights Armor. We found a few chinks, but we could not pierce it deep enough to push them down and in the end lost the 3rd Set 25-19 and the Match 3-0.

Kings is the Benchmark for excellence for Volleyball in our Conference. Knowing that, we will only get better and we await our opportunity to meet them again and it will be any ones match.

We take a break and prepare for a trip to Lakewood next Tuesday.

Road Trip to Sultan

So we took on the road to play the Turks of Sultan

The night started off with the JVC and JV matches. Both teams came out and played hard from the get-go.

The JVC kids had their 1st official taste of Conference play and gave it their all. In the end they fell a few points shy in the 3rd game to lose the set 1-2. They played great and the promise of the future is bright.

The JV team started off strong and kept pushing all the way through the match. In the end they came away with the 3-0 match victory. Great job all night long!!!!

The Varsity took to the floor to find their rhythm and they hit their stride in the 1st game, led by the hitting of Amanda Marvin and some great serving by Beth Carlson. In the 2nd game we traded rallies and in the end strong defense by Hannah Linsenmayer helped to push us through to the set win. In the 3rd game, our Serving found it's groove again, led by Alex Flake and Amanda Marvin, and we took the 3rd game and the sweep for the Match.

The Girls played well most of the match and they know they will only get better.

Home Match #2 Last Night

In a gym filled with great energy the JV and Varsity teams came through with 2 very good wins against a much improved Cedarcrest Team.

The JV set the stage by their all around great defense and tough play at the net. The took 2 out of 3 in impressive fashion. Congrats Girls on a job well done and one that will get you prepared for your 1st Tournament of the HS season, tomorrow at Mariner HS.

The Varsity came out playing well in the 1st game and Cedarcrest was hanging with us to to 15-15, then Tory Popp came in and took the team on a 10-0 serving run to finish off the 1st set.
The next game, the girls believed in me when I said "Put your Foot on the Gas!!!" and blazed to a 25-12 win.
The 3rd was a total shakeup of the lineup and even given that we still pushed hard and came away with the game win and the match win 3-0.
We saw alot of Heart and Understanding of the game unfold last night. I am very proud of the immense efforts by everyone who is a part of this team.
Congratulations Girls on a well deserved Win!!!!

Hats off to Brandon and Cedarcrest. They played with alot of passion and belief. They are a deserving team of respect by their VB peers.

Road Trip #1 for the 2011 Season

JV and Varsity took it on the road for the 2nd match of the Conference, heading up to Granite Falls.

The JV started out the night playing with some great team work and sustained many long rallies throughout the night to pull away with a 2-1 victory. Everyone was involved in the action. You can see the development of this group with each match. Great Job Girls!!!!!

The Varsity followed suit with a 3-0 victory. It was a well balanced team effort and by the smiles on the girls faces a much welcomed victory that was well deserved by them.

Home Match #2 against a much improved Cedarcrest team to take place Thursday night @7pm.

Adidas Invite- 2011

The Varsity Team rolled down to the Valley on Saturday to compete in the Adidas Invite at Auburn Mountainview HS.

It was a Hot day in the gym and there were many hot teams that came out on fire.

Our 1st match of the day was against our neighbors at Jackson HS. They played like the #1 ranked team in 4A (#56 Nationally) and made a quick match of it against us.

That set the tone for what would be a rough road the rest of the day. We made many personnel and rotations changes throughout the day and used the match play to gain experience with each other.

One thing I told the girls going into this tournament, was to expect the unexpected and be ready to go with whatever the flow was out there and to their credit they did this with great determination and a positive outlook on the situation at hand.

Kudos's to all the great parents and family members who endeared a long hot day and who also did it with positive encouragement for their daughters and this team.

Now it is time to look to Conference play and that means the 1st road match of the year at Granite Falls.

The 2011 Season is Underway

Well we kicked off the season last night and it was a great one for all 3 Teams in the program.

I was most impressed with our JVC team, who was originally scheduled to play at Kennedy last night, alter their plans and stay home to play part of Coupeville's JV team, and go out and BEAT that JV team in 3 Games (15-3) in the 3rd.

We saw how a team can pull together and rally around being short handed and come out and be a bunch of Gamers.

Congrats Girls and Mary Kay for a job WELL DONE!!!!

The JV team hit their stride and took 2 out of 3 games. They are a solid team who looked good from all aspects. They have alot of success in their future and play with the intensity that shows that.

The Varsity came out with passion last night. They are a team that is working to find their successful balance and they took some good steps to get there last night.

The Senior Leadership dug in last night and it showed in the elevation of play by the other players. They are invaluable to me as a coach for they do the Mentoring for the other players that cannot be judged on a scale, for there is no price for that value.

We took care business last night against Coupeville, winning in 3 and set a good tone for the rest of the conference season.

Congrats Girls on a job well done last night!!!!

Next on the schedule for the Varsity, the Adidas Invite, Saturday Sept 10th. One of the best Tournaments in the State and a great early watermark test for these young women.

We have had a great Tryout and through the hardwork the Teams that will make up the AMHS VB Program for 2011 have been set.
